The word "health" is defined by the world health organization as a "state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." A recent look at the school "health" program in Texas has placed the emphasis on four major areas: prevention, intervention, promotion and health teaching.

Prevention serves to validate the very nature of health services. Therefore, school nurses serve as catalysts for promoting health through formal-informal health education, advocates for students and families to access needed community services and to ensure child safety, and supportive partners with families to provide professional care and monitoring of student health. In addition, professional nurses provide health assessment and referral services coupled with skilled intervention to promote optimum health.

BISD School Health Services' staff believes that learning is directly related to the status of student health; that a healthy lifestyle is maintained because of education. They also believe that employee wellness is directly related to quality teaching and to adequate support services. Therefore Health Services provides the platform whereby health prevention and education, health promotion, health assessment and appropriate referral services are provided for all students and staff in Birdville School District.
